Case Study: Global Manufacturing with Valero Refining, Mustang Engineering, International Alliance Group and FabsGroup

In 2001, Expansion Joint Systems, Inc. joined Mustang Engineering and International Alliance Group to design and build several FCCU expansion joints for Valero’s Texas City refinery FCCU Upgrade Project. The project consisted of (6) metal FCCU components and (1) refractory lined fabric expansion joint. The two largest units, a 67” and a 104” diameter flue gas expansion joint were fabricated by EJS and our Canadian partner, FabsGroup in Canada and shipped to the site for installation.

As one of the largest and most successful custom metal fabricators in the world, FabsGroup fabricates most of the complex expansion joints for larger projects for EJS-US. With over 400,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space, FabsGroup provides EJS with limitless fabrication capacity with a quality level superior to most fabricators in the world. This relationship with FabsGroup enables us to offer our customers throughout Canada, U.S., Mexico and South America with larger more complex products and lower prices while maintaining EJS’s innovative design and engineering expertise and guarantee.

Since 1959, FabsGroup (formerly B&X Industries) has built a worldwide reputation as the premier manufacturer of FCCU cyclones, pressure vessels and heat exchangers. Today, the company is recognized worldwide as providing the highest standard of custom metal fabrication for our customers. The company operates several ASME Section VIII facilities in various locations in Quebec and Ontario.

One of the top U.S. refining companies, Valero has an extensive refining system with a throughput capacity of almost 2 million barrels per day. The company's geographically diverse refining network stretches from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast and West Coast.

Valero acquired the Texas City refinery and two other Gulf Coast facilities when the company purchased Basis Petroleum in 1997. As part of our company wide pursuit of increased productivity, several recent upgrading projects have significantly enhanced the feedstock flexibility and product diversity of the refinery. The Texas City refinery produces approximately 243,000 barrels per day (BPD) and products include gasoline, low-sulfur diesel, kerosene, home heating oil and jet fuel.
